How often should filter sand be changed?

If you have a sand filter for your swimming pool, you may wonder how often the sand inside it needs to be replaced. As a general guide, pool filter sand should usually be changed every 3–5 years, although this can vary depending on how often your pool is used and how well the filter is maintained.

Over time, the sand becomes worn and less effective at trapping dirt, oils and other particles. This can result in cloudy water, longer filtration times and a pool that is more difficult to keep clean.

Signs your filter sand may need changing

  • Your pool water remains cloudy despite correct chemical levels.
  • The filter seems to be running for longer than usual.
  • You are needing to backwash the filter more frequently.
  • Water quality is becoming harder to maintain.
  • The sand has become compacted or damaged.

Regular backwashing and proper pool maintenance can help your filter sand last longer, but eventually the sand will need to be replaced.

If you’re unsure whether your pool filter needs new sand, Waterline Pools in the Helderberg can inspect your filtration system and advise whether the sand needs changing or if there is another reason your pool isn’t filtering properly.
